Strategic Planning Session

This one-day (6-6.5 hour) facilitated session is meant for board directors, executive directors, and senior leaders in the nonprofit sector.

In this session, the organization’s leadership will assess the current environment it operates in, identify priorities, and set long-term goals.

Strategic Planning Session

This facilitated session involves the board, executive director, and senior leaders coming together to collaboratively reaffirm the mission and vision, and determine the direction of the organization, its priority areas, and goals for the next three (3) to five (5) years.

Having a strategic plan in place is an important tool to have, as it ensures that everyone – board, senior leaders, and staff – are all on the same page and working to achieve the same goals. This helps lead to the long-term success and sustainability of the organization.

SARC offers a number of Strategic Planning Services that are meant to be hosted prior, or following the Strategic Planning Session:

The above sessions are available to host as part of your strategic planning process, or as independent sessions. The choice is yours!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does SARC's Strategic Planning Session include?

SARC’s Strategic Planning Session provides time for critical thinking, collaboration, decision-making, and setting a direction for the organization’s future. During the session, you will review the mission, vision, and values of the organization. You will envision success and analyze the organization’s current environment in terms of strengths, opportunities, and trends, as well as determine and prioritize strategic goals that work towards achieving the mission.

How long is the Strategic Planning Session?

SARC’s Strategic Planning Session typically runs 6-6.5 hours – 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 or 3:30 p.m. A half-hour lunch break and refreshment breaks are provided throughout the day.

Who should attend the Strategic Planning Session?

Typically, the executive director, senior leaders, and the board. The organization’s board is responsible for setting the direction and creating high-level goals for the organization in partnership with the executive director. Prior to the strategic planning session, people your organization support, family members, employees, or other stakeholders should be asked to contribute their ideas through a consultation process.

What is a consultation process?

Strategic planning is most effective when it is inclusive. A consultation process fosters transparency, builds trust, and ensures that decisions reflect the needs and opinions of all those affected by the strategic plan. Organizations can engage with stakeholders through various methods, such as surveys or focus groups, which can be conducted independently or facilitated by SARC.

What happens after the Strategic Planning Session?

SARC’s facilitator will develop and send a comprehensive final report, outlining the day’s discussions and decisions. Once this is received, it is up to the organization to keep the momentum going by developing the strategic plan document, building action plans, and reporting on progress. SARC will also contact the organization three-to-six months following the session to see how the remainder of the strategic planning process is going.
