Dementia Capable Support of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities & Dementia

SARC is pleased to partner with the NTG-Canadian Consortium on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia to host a workshop on the Canadian adaptation of the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices (NTG) Dementia Capable Support of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia national training curriculum.

This course is based on the evidence-informed Canadian version of the NTG Education and Training Curriculum on Dementia and Intellectual & Developmental disabilities.

This course is offered as a two-day 'Basic' course or a three-day 'NTG-Canada Affiliated Trainer' course.

Outcomes:

  • Gain a greater understanding of dementia and its effects on people with intellectual disabilities
  • Increase capacity to provide dementia-capable direct services to adults with intellectual disabilities and dementia
  • Understand how to develop a dementia-capable environment and supports

2-Day Basic Workshop

This highly interactive and evidence-informed course covers the basic concepts of support of an adult with intellectual disabilities and dementia.

This workshop is appropriate for any staff with direct or ancillary support responsibilites of older adults with intellectual and development disabilities in disability-related, health care, and aging-related organizations. This workshop would be applicable to Direct Support Professionals, Personal Support Workers, Supervisors, Long-Term Care personnel, etc.)

Topics include:

  • Introducting to aging and intellectual disabilities
  • Understanding dementia in adults with intellectual disabilities
  • What is dementia? How does it present differently in adults with intellectual disabilities?
  • Early detection and screening for dementia 
  • Obtaining a diagnosis
  • Health care advocacy for adults with intellectual disabilities and dementia
  • Understanding behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia affecting adults with intellectual disabilities
  • Non-pharmacologic interventions
  • Communication tips and strategies
  • Adapting the physical environment
  • Dementia capable homes
  • Stage-based consideration
  • Bridging aging and disability networks

3-Day Affiliated Trainer Workshop

The first two days of the workshop cover the copics outlined in the 2-Day Basic Workshop. 

This third day is devoted to understanding and delivering components of the Canadian Version of the NTG Dementia Capable Care Curriculum. 

This workshop is appropriate for any staff with direct or ancillary support responsibilities of older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in disability-related, health care, and aging-related organizations who will take a leadership role in developing dementia-capable supports in their own region, and want to become an 'NTG-Canada Affiliated Provincial Trainer'.

NTG-Canada Affiliated Provincial Trainers are authorized to use NTG branded and copyrighted training materials to train within their own organization or to conduct training for outside agencies and organizations. Affiliated Trainers have access to expanded topic modules, a resource guide, continuing education webinars, and are mentored by NTG-Canada Master Trainers. 

Following completion of tht third day, participants are required to successfully complete an online test of knowledge before they will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and receive NTG branded and copyrighted materials.

  • 2-Day Basic Workshop: $300
  • 3-Day Affiliated Trainer Workshop: $500

The registration fee includes lunch and refreshments. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies upon registration. SARC cannot guarantee this because of the third-party catering. If you have severe allergies, please plan to bring a lunch.
