When it comes to volunteer retention our minds often jump first to our own capacity, and what our organization is capable of achieving when it comes to retention. But it's important to look at retention from the volunteer's perspective. By offering an opportunity to affect change, and create a meaningful experience for your volunteers, you will see your volunteer retention strengthen. This workshop will examine the steps to creating a meaningful connection with volunteers, what motivates volunteers, and what factors impact the volunteer's decision to leave the organization.

Dawn Bourbonnais is Volunteer Manitoba’s Manager of Communications & Outreach and is responsible for increasing awareness of Volunteer Manitoba’s mission – to encourage and promote volunteerism across the province.

Dawn oversees VM’s internal and external communications strategies, maintains the website and social media platforms, delivers presentations and organizes community outreach, and manages VM’s referral services. She works closely with volunteer managers across Manitoba, and provides advice and support on issues relating to volunteer management.

Prior to working for Volunteer Manitoba, Dawn spent over 15 years working in the not-for-profit and arts sector, specifically in the music and film sectors. She is a member of Volunteer Canada’s National Council of Volunteer Centres and currently sits on the board of VMPC (Volunteer Management Professionals of Canada).

Dawn has also managed volunteers for many festival and community events held in Winnipeg, and is especially fond of the volunteers at the Jazz Winnipeg Festival (whom she worked with for over 13 years)
