It was once believed that people experiencing disability aged more quickly than people who did not have a disability. We know now that this is not always the case and that individuals with intellectual disabilities are living longer, with some experiencing a lifespan similar to those without disabilities.   Medical advancements have made a big difference in this area and the research on this continues to evolve.

Because the disability services sector is seeing an increased number of people who are growing older, it has led to the sector examining, researching, and discussing the impact of aging on individuals.
